No Harp, No Story

Utrecht will once again be taken over by harps from 26 February till 2 March, with the launch of the third international Dutch Harp Festival there. The Festival was founded in 2010 by the then 20 year old harp virtuoso Remy van Kesteren and immediately created a sensation in the harp world thanks to its unusual programmes and its combination of a competition with a festival. One result of this is that the harp is now much more widely accepted as a solo instrument.

No Harp, No Story
The theme of the DHF 2014 is No Harp, No Story: this is a direct reference to the harpist’s original function as a teller of tales and gatherer of news. The international harpists Isabelle Moretti, Benjamin Bagby, Catrin Finch, Sivan Magen, Sylvain Blassel, Sandrine Chatron andGodelieve Schrama will perform in various concerts, whilst talented young harpists from all over the world will compete for a place in the competition finals. The Dutch Harp Festival 2014 promises to be immensely exciting, with appearances by Dutch artists Hans van Manen, Kees van Kooten, Claron McFadden, Martin Fondse, Edwin Rutten, Giel Beelen and Philip Freriks. The events and concerts of DHF 2014 will be covered extensively by Dutch Radio 4.
Festival Highlights
Master classes will be given by members of the Dutch Harp Competition’s jury alongside the Competition’s quarter-finals, semi-finals and final; there will also be evening and late night concerts, light-hearted lunch concerts and a wonderful concert for children given by the Academy for Musical Talent. Our traditional Harp Route for the whole family will be held at various locations in the city on the Sunday. De Winkel van Sinkel will serve as the Festival Café, where Remy van Kesteren will interview a selection of eminent guests.
